Temple University Philippine American Council

Introducing TUPAC's Executive Board

Every TU organization has a group of members who dedicate extra amounts of time, energy, and pride to support the overall group. The E-board consists of nine amazing Temple students who have to team up to plan and run Temple University’s Philippine-American Council. Get to know each member!

Rizza Moralba: Co-President

Picture
Hi, guys!

My name is Rizza Moralba but most people call me Reezy.  I'm a junior, a pre-nursing major and I'm also one half of TUPAC's Co-Presidents.  I've been an active TUPAC member since my very first college semester (back in fall 2008, dzamn!).  A little bit about myself: I was born and raised in the city streets of South Philadelphia.  I always get bored with my hair, so my hairstyle tends to change at least 3 times a year.  I have an affinity for coffee, good food, dark denim, spiderman, and puppies. I'm a part-time fashion stylist at LOFT in the shops at the liberty place.  I love to write, so follow me on tumblr (
reezy.tumblr.com )!  If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up anytime ([email protected])!

Reasons why I love TUPAC: I was actually forced into going to my first TUPAC meeting when I was a freshman.  Not going to lie, I thought it was going to be whack.  At that meeting, I met so many different people and actually had fun, so I continued to attend the general body meetings.  As time went on, the TUPAC members took me into their family and I had some sense of community, which is what, I think, every freshman needs when entering a huge university and not knowing many people.  One main reason why I love TUPAC is that I've gained so many friends being in this group.  If I hadn't joined, I probably wouldn't even be acquainted to half of the college friends that I have now.  Another reason why I love TUPAC is because I've learned SO SO much about my culture with the language workshops, discussions, heritage month events, FIND experiences, and more.  I believe I've become so much more knowledgeable and proud of my heritage because of TUPAC.  Yeah, we have fun and joke around a lot, but when it gets down to the nitty gritty, that's what we're about... promoting cultural awareness and that's what I love about TUPAC.  It has been such a great experience being part of such a great student organization, I don't ever want to leave! :(

Rochelle Salamat: Co-President

Picture
What up, TUPAC!

My name is Rochelle Salamat, your Co-President for 2010-2011, along with my partner in crime, Miss Rizza Moralba. This is my third year here at Temple University, and I am a pre-nursing/biology major. A few random things about myself: I'm very family oriented. I'm obsessed with snowboarding! If anyone ever wants to go snowboarding, PLEASE give me a call because I'm always down to shred. I'm a scorpio. I was once a workaholic until I began working at CVS/pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.. Now I just can't stand customer service. I am a big EAGLES fan (no haters please), or well just any Philly team in general. So, if you have any questions/comments regarding TUPAC, snowboarding, sports, or just anything at all.. feel free to hit me up anytime (
[email protected])!

Reasons why I love TUPAC: To be completely honest, I went out of my way to find a Filipino organization at Temple during my Freshman year. I did some research, found TUPAC, and was highly upset when meetings coincided with my class time. I remember sending e-mails trying to find out whether or not it was still possible to join, and for any information or updates available - yes, I was that hype. Three years later, I've worked my up to being the Co-President, and I'm the one receiving those e-mails from hype Freshman's (Lol, just kidding!). Anyways, to make this short and simple, I love TUPAC simply because it's honestly like a big family. I've made great friends in this organization, friends that I know I'll have for a lifetime, and that's it. What more can I say? I love my team.

Will Killing: Vice President

Picture
What’s up everybody!

My name is Will Killing. I am in my third year at Temple studying Civil Engineering & Construction Management. I am currently the Internal Vice President of TUPAC (the first black/Filipino VP in TUPAC history!).

I was born in Seoul, Korea on August 20, 1989 and have lived in almost every part of Philadelphia. I am a sports fanatic, huge fan of them Boys from Big D and Kobe and the Lakers. Besides watching sports I enjoy coaching and playing as well. I have worked for Bed Bath & Beyond (NOT Bath & Body Works) for 3 years. I enjoy trying new things and continue to seek opportunities to broaden my sense of life!

I have been a member of TUPAC since 2009. I was introduced to the org by none other than our lovely and talented co-prez Reezy. I really didn’t know what to expect, but since I had a desire to learn about my culture and meet new people I joined without hesitation. And from day one I have not been disappointed, I continue to learn and experience new things with my TUPAC family that continues to grow. As much as I love the learning and networking, nothing compares to the fun and good times we’ve had as a family.

Ben Agbayani: External Vice President

Picture
I was born in the Philippines and moved to the US when i was 5.  I'm a senior studying Kinesiology in order to get into Physical Therapy school. I love playing tennis and basketball.

Fun fact: I looooooves pixar films :p

Reasons why I love TUPAC:  I met a majority of my college friends through this club.  Tupac teaches more about my culture and where I came from.  PRITTY GURLZ

Jen Ho: Secretary

Picture
What up TUPACians! My names Jennifer, but everyone calls me Jen. I'm a sophomore, on a pre-pharmacy track as a Biology and Spanish major. I'm the current secretary/treasurer of TUPAC. I was born in New York, but spent the majority of my life in Philadelphiaaa. I can play the guitar, piano, clarinet and flute, but I'm not particularly amazing at any of them, mostly cause I don't find the time to practice. I like riding bikes (fixie!)  and sitting outside when it's warm. I'm a sucker for good food, good fashion, and a good novel. I wish I had the brain capacity to learn everything I want to, because I think there's too many things in this life that shouldn't be left unseen. I like watching the sun rise and sun set, and watching the stars at night. :)

Reasons why I love TUPAC: I joined my freshman year because a friend of mine introduced me to some members and I decided to see it was like. It was really awkward at first. As a freshman, I wasn't sure how college would be like and how people would react. I ended up making a lot of good friends, ....and not to mention the partying. TUPAC continued to be a place where I could just meet up with friends and have a good conversation. The events were fun and informational, and although I'm not Filipino myself, TUPAC made me more interested in other cultures outside of my own. It's an awesome experience, and definitely one of the most memorable things that I have done in college so far.

Melanie Roxanne Gampon: Public Relations

Picture
Heys dudes, my name is Melanie Roxanne Gampon, the Public Relations (PR) of TUPAC....just call Mel. I'm a Sophomore at Temple University studying Public Health. I was once a Pre-Nursing major in the beginning of my Freshman year but did not like it. I was born and raised in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and I'm the baby in my family. I do have a connection with Temple because my mother works at the hospital as a nurse; my older sister graduated from there in 2009; my older brother is a Senior there at the University; and a few of my relatives have graduated from there as well. Aside from all that, I like watching movies, playing music, and reading books. So if anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

Reasons why I love TUPAC: I first heard about TUPAC at Fall Fest during my Freshman year (2009). Rochelle, the Co-President, was walking around and randomly handed me and my friend a flyer about the first meeting. When I attended, I did not realize that there were a lot of Filipino students at Temple and that there are many of those who just know about the culture and wanted to learn more. I, on the other hand, just wanted to meet more people and to make more friends. The first time I got involved was when I volunteered to work with the PR to make a banner for TUPAC. And because of that, I decided to run as the next PR for the organization.

The reason why I always come back to TUPAC was not only because of my position, but also because it feels like I am being surrounded by family. I mean, I'm always surrounded by my family at home, but being at school and not knowing anyone who is Filipino who knows what it's like to be one in a diverse university can be difficult sometimes. Being in TUPAC provides a sense of belonging where I can just talk about anything, relax, and have fun. I hope that anyone that joins the organization would feel that too.

John Doan: Historian

Picture
Hello everyone!

My name’s John Doan. I’m a junior, chemistry major, and I’m the historian for TUPAC.  I’m involved in a lot of background work with TUPAC but at meetings I’m usually just taking pictures and relaxing. A little bit about myself: I was born in DC but grew up in South Philadelphia. My hobbies include sports, video games, cooking, learning about space, traveling, and many more! I’m easy to talk too, so just come up and say hello. I’m actually not
Filipino, but rather Vietnamese and white (Either French or Italian, my mom isn’t sure), but that doesn’t matter because TUPAC accepts everyone.

Reasons why I love TUPAC: I love TUPAC because it’s a family. The atmosphere is great and I really do just love being at and helping with the events. I enjoy every meeting I go to whether its general body or an e-board meeting. A lot of my friends came from TUPAC, and I’m hoping to make more from it. I also love learning new things about anything; mainly space but Filipino culture is really interesting too! I’ve learned so much about the culture, heritage, and its language. One of my favorite events of the past was learning about Filipino mythology during Halloween! Also, TUPAC isn’t all about work. I don’t even know how many wasted hours we have due to joking around and having fun rather than doing work with the e-board (which is still exciting…). It’s been a great experience with more to come, too bad someone has to take my spot!

Aebert Fernandez: Community Service Representative

Picture
The Awesome Biography of Aebert Fernandez (By Aebert Fernandez)

Hey Guys....Did you know that 6,922 days ago (and counting) a small baby boy was born in the mountains of the Philippines......he was hence forth forever to be known as Aebert. He had a dream of someday going to foreign countries, learn their languages, and help out their people. In the hopes that one day he would become a surgeon. Currently he is at his early stages of this process; as of now he is a freshman majoring in Biochemistry and he is also the Community Service Representative of TUPAC. He is awesome at most things including wake boarding, video gaming, DJing, and being funny. There is only one of him in the world.

He joined TUPAC because he felt that the organization was missing something, because the Philippine-American was well represented but what about just the Philippine part. Being born and raised in the Philippines, Aebert seems to be capable of filling the part. Not only has does Aebert know a lot about Filipino culture and speak the language, he also retained a little bit of the accent to keep his credibility authentic. He took the community service rep. position just to have some kind of input in TUPAC, cause when he joined last semester, it didn't live up to expectations. Hopefully with his inclusion there will be more of the Filipino, with all the fun and craziness that people know comes with it......or will soon find out...

Candy Copio: Webpage Master

Dear fellow TUPAC members,

First off, thanks for joining and supporting the Filipino club here at Temple! You’re dedication truly means a lot to me and the rest of the e-board.

For those who have never met me, my name is Candace (Candy) Copio. I’m a sophomore. I study Sociology and I’m minoring in Theater here at TU. I heard about TUPAC from a girl named Mel Gampon (she’s our PR!). I started showing up at meetings and such, and before I knew it, I decided to join the e-board team! In case I don’t look fully Filipino, well… I’m not haha- I’m only half, but so proud of it!! My mom was born in the city of Butuan which is located at the northeastern part of Agusan Valley
Mindanao. She moved to the U.S. when she was 30! My dad was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I love my parents!

Anyways, I’m so grateful for this club. I’ve met so many sweet people through this organization, and I plan on meeting so many more! It’s also really empowering to see all these people come together to celebrate our heritage.
